Claim to be Muslim, Yet Act Otherwise

You claim to be a Muslim and you have with you a [Muslim] judge, an imaam [for salaah], a shaykh, and people to call the adhaan or so I am told.  Your father and grandfather were both disbelievers, yet they did not do what you have done.  They both made promises and fulfilled them, while you pledged and betrayed it, you promised and did not fulfill it.

—Ibn Taymiyyah [d. 728AH/1328CE] to Qaza (Tartar King) while requesting him not to invade Damascus

[Al-A’laam al-‘Aliyyah, pp.72-73]

(Read on pg 8, Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, A Commentary on Ibn Taymiyyah’s Essay on the Heart. Dalwah Corner Bookstore. Kuala Lampur: 2008.)
